Court filing fees average around $500 and vary by jurisdiction. Estimated ranges are based on typical divorce cases we’ve seen; your actual costs depend on your situation.

How Our Fees Work

Divorce is difficult enough without the added stress of unpredictable costs. Here is how the fees are structured, so you can focus on making thoughtful decisions instead of worrying about hidden charges.

Initial Consultation

Your first consultation is a dedicated time to talk through your situation in a supportive, low pressure setting. We use it to understand your priorities, answer your questions, and explain how mediation works.

Ongoing Mediation Sessions

Sessions after the initial consultation are billed hourly, and how many you need depends on the complexity of your situation. The aim is to help you move forward efficiently and thoughtfully, without unnecessary time or cost.

Sharing the Cost

Most couples choose to share the mediation fees equally, which helps keep the process balanced and fair. Arrangements stay flexible and can be adjusted to your circumstances.

Washington, DC Divorce Mediation: Common Questions

Can we mediate by video?

Yes. Sessions are often held by video, so couples in Washington, DC and nearby Northern Virginia and Maryland can take part from home, even when you now live in different places.

What does divorce mediation cost in Washington, DC?

Cost mostly depends on how many sessions you need, which depends on how many issues are still open. The estimator above gives a rough range, our fees page explains how billing works, and your free case review is the place to get a figure for your situation.

Can we mediate if our case is already filed in DC Superior Court?

In many cases, yes. Couples often mediate after a case has been filed. Your mediator can tell you how mediation would fit alongside your court schedule.

What if one of us lives in Virginia or Maryland?

Mediation can still work, and video sessions make it easier when you live in different places. Where your case is handled can depend on your circumstances, so your mediator can talk through what that means for you.

Can mediation help us build a parenting plan?

Yes. Parenting schedules, holidays, school decisions and support can all be worked through in mediation. Your mediator can walk you through how the guidelines tend to apply to your family.

Do we have to agree on everything before we start?

No. Most couples start with open questions about the house, finances or parenting. Working through those is what mediation is for. What matters most is that both of you are willing to take part.

Divorce Mediation in the District

DC divorces are heard by the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, Family Court, Domestic Relations Branch, at the H. Carl Moultrie Courthouse, 500 Indiana Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20001. That branch handles divorce, legal separation, custody, visitation and adoptions for the whole District.

The District is one jurisdiction with one busy Family Court calendar, which changes the arithmetic of mediation. Getting a contested matter in front of a judge takes time. Reaching an agreement does not have to. Couples who mediate first arrive at the Moultrie Courthouse with the parenting plan and the property division already written, and the filing becomes administrative. Court rules and local practice change, so confirm current requirements with the court or your attorney.

We mediate with couples across the District, including Capitol Hill, Logan Circle, Shaw, Petworth and Columbia Heights, by video or in person.
