Court filing fees average around $500 and vary by jurisdiction. Estimated ranges are based on typical divorce cases we’ve seen; your actual costs depend on your situation.

How Our Fees Work

Divorce is difficult enough without the added stress of unpredictable costs. Here is how the fees are structured, so you can focus on making thoughtful decisions instead of worrying about hidden charges.

Initial Consultation

Your first consultation is a dedicated time to talk through your situation in a supportive, low pressure setting. We use it to understand your priorities, answer your questions, and explain how mediation works.

Ongoing Mediation Sessions

Sessions after the initial consultation are billed hourly, and how many you need depends on the complexity of your situation. The aim is to help you move forward efficiently and thoughtfully, without unnecessary time or cost.

Sharing the Cost

Most couples choose to share the mediation fees equally, which helps keep the process balanced and fair. Arrangements stay flexible and can be adjusted to your circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is divorce mediation?

Divorce mediation is a process where a neutral third party, known as a mediator, facilitates communication between two parties going through a divorce. The mediator helps couples work through issues such as property division, child custody, parenting plans, and spousal or child support, without making the decisions for them. It is generally less adversarial and less expensive than traditional divorce litigation.

How does divorce mediation differ from traditional litigation?

In mediation, the parties themselves have control over the outcome and work toward an agreement they both find acceptable. In litigation, decisions are made by a judge. Mediation also avoids many court costs, keeps discussions private and confidential, typically completes faster because it does not depend on the court's schedule, and tends to be less adversarial, which can help preserve relationships that matter after the divorce.

How long does the divorce mediation process typically take?

On average, divorce mediation might take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. It depends on the complexity of the case, how willing both parties are to negotiate, and scheduling availability. More complex situations involving substantial assets, business interests, or custody disputes may take longer.

Is mediation legally binding?

The mediation process itself is not legally binding. However, once both parties agree on the terms and a written agreement, often called a Memorandum of Understanding or Marital Settlement Agreement, is signed, that agreement becomes a legally binding contract. It becomes enforceable when it is incorporated into the divorce decree.

What happens after divorce mediation?

A formal Memorandum of Understanding or Marital Settlement Agreement is drafted based on the decisions made in mediation. Both parties review it, typically with their own attorneys, and sign it. It is then submitted to the court for approval. Both parties must comply with the terms of the agreement, and legal remedies are available if one party does not.

Education

Tim Dowling – Founder & CEO, Resolvium Mediation Group

I’m Tim Dowling, the founder of Resolvium Mediation Group, and I built this company with one clear goal in mind: to change the way families experience divorce. After 25 years navigating complex contracts, litigation, and high-stakes negotiations, I saw just how broken, adversarial, and financially devastating the traditional divorce process can be. I knew there had to be a better way, and I created one.

My career spans corporate finance, banking, mortgage, and legal operations, including hands-on litigation work and legal team strategy consulting. This experience has given me an insider’s view of how the legal system functions and how traditional models often fail families in crisis. It further fueled my desire to build something better: a streamlined, client-first approach to divorce that delivers clarity, structure, and peace of mind.

I’ve trained extensively in law and dispute resolution, including formal education at the Pepperdine Caruso School of Law and the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution, one of the nation’s leading programs for mediation and conflict management. I also studied in Professional Studies at Northwestern University, where I deepened my skills in negotiation, client communication, and structured settlement design. I bring that legal foundation together with practical experience to lead a model that prioritizes resolution over conflict, and results over chaos.

Resolvium isn’t just a mediation firm. It’s a system and support model designed to help both clients and professionals. For families, we offer efficient, structured divorce solutions, including our signature 5-Day Divorce, that preserve assets, protect children, and keep decisions in your hands, not a judge’s. For licensees, we offer a turnkey business platform with legal infrastructure, marketing systems, and mentorship, empowering mediators to build a mission-driven practice with clarity and confidence.

This work is personal to me. Every case resolved outside of court, every client protected from prolonged conflict, and every mediator we support in the field brings us closer to our mission: transforming how families separate, with peace, dignity, and forward momentum.

If you’re navigating a divorce or seeking to grow your career as a conflict resolution professional, I welcome you to explore Resolvium. We’re leading a better way forward, and there’s room for you in it.

Divorce Mediation in Cook County

Chicago divorces are heard by the Circuit Court of Cook County, Domestic Relations Division, at the Richard J. Daley Center, 50 West Washington Street, Chicago, IL 60602. That division handles dissolution of marriage, allocation of parental responsibilities, child support and maintenance for the city and much of the surrounding county.

Illinois is a no-fault state: the only ground for dissolution is irreconcilable differences, so there is nothing to prove about who caused the marriage to end. What the court still has to approve is the substance, the parenting plan and the division of property and debt. Mediation is where couples build that substance themselves instead of leaving it to a motion calendar. Court rules and local practice change, so confirm current requirements with the court or your attorney.

We mediate with couples across Cook County and the collar counties, including Schaumburg, Arlington Heights and Lake County, by video or in person in Chicago.
